Ukrainian, which over the past five years have experienced three gas wars with Russia, and who are now experiencing all the “charms” of regular gas upgrades, are unlikely to consider this type of fuel ideal. But in the world a completely different approach dominates — natural gas (methane) is the best candidate for replacing both coal and the «peaceful atom». And there are several reasons at once.
The first reason — in the past few years, a new effective way to extract natural gas from shales has been found. T. n. Slantsy gas has already brought the United States in the first place in the world in terms of gas production, moreover, new reserves will be enough for ninety years at least. On the way, the shale revolution in Europe, which also promises to be no less powerful in terms of results. Moreover, the industry for the liquefaction of natural gas, which was actively developing in the «shale revolution», also did not disappear anywhere. As a result of the action of these factors, gas, which had not been in short supply (compared to oil), will become even more affordable — and therefore cheaper. The second advantage of gas is a minimum of environmental pollution. Methane combustion product is carbon dioxide and water, there is neither ash, nor the harmful emissions into the atmosphere characteristic of coal TPPs. So, the problem of carbon dioxide remains, but it can be solved in the same way as with power plants on coal. And at the same price — minus a third of power, and a third more expensive.
But the most important thing is that of all types of thermal generation, it is gas TPPs that provide the maximum efficiency of heat energy converting into electric at the cost of a kilowatt of capacities, three smaller “advanced” coal TPPs (dollar per kilowatt of power against $ 2.8). And if it is difficult to “squeeze out” additional efficiency from coal, then the progress of gas turbines is simply amazing.
So, the modern gas TPP works on a combined principle. At first, the gas, burning, rotates the turbine, and then the spent gases go to heating water — the pairs are formed rotate the steam turbine. In modern turbines for two gas, one steam. In ultra -modern, the so -called H -class, for each gas, they are in steam — they are united in a single unit. Such turbines operate at higher combustion temperatures, as a result, their efficiency allows you to achieve impressive 60% (we are talking purely about energy efficiency, when thermal energy is used only for the production of electric energy and does not go to heating need).
Highly efficient gas turbine N -class — Haytek masterpiece in energy. Its efficiency may exceed 60%
Hence the conclusion: Ukraine, which is going to accept billions of dollars in Russia for the completion of the Rivne and Khmelnitsky nuclear power plants, would be worth thinking about the alternative in the form of new generation gas TPPs — to replace the old and ineffective. And at the same time take an example from neighboring Poland, where the process of shale gas intelligence has been in full swing for a year. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to really be in the current state of affairs in the energy sector, where boycofirts are refueling.
