Gabions

Throughout the world, builders and engineers have developed whole protective and supporting complexes for the built -in complex structures for millennia. But only two hundred years old Italian military (not even builders!) it occurred to create the so -called “baskets with stones” to strengthen defensive structures — translated into Italian — gabion.

Over time, the Gabions were transformed into an exceptionally peaceful device, which is a hexagonal metal mesh, clogged with stones to the edges. They are used for sanitation, to protect the slopes from strong landslides, villages, rockfalls. Gabions can also be used to strengthen the weak coasts of rivers, where there is a high probability of collapse of the coast.

That is, today, Gabions are used more to preserve natural landscapes than for the needs of consumers, since the dimensions of these devices themselves are doubtful about the possibility of their use near residential buildings.

A metal grid deserves special attention, which, in fact, restrains all the stones together. It is usually made of galvanized steel double torsion. The maximum load that such a net can withstand is 3000 kg/m — 5500 kg/m. That is, quite a lot, but not too much. Therefore, recently, scientists have been working on another variety of such wire, which will be able to withstand the load two to three times large.
